Anniversary Sessions: Frieze 30

Lubaina Himid & Jennifer Higgie on influence

Lubaina Himid lives and works in Preston, UK, where she is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire. For more than four decades, Himid has created paintings, drawings and installations that uncover and celebrate marginalized histories, figures and forms of cultural expression, frequently referencing art history and the canon as a means to address the invisibility of the Black body in the Western pictorial tradition. She won the Turner Prize in 2017 and will present a major monographic exhibition at Tate Modern, London, UK, in 2021.

Formerly Editor of frieze magazine, Jennifer Higgie is now Editor-at-Large and the writer and presenter of Bow Down, a podcast about women in art history. Her book The Mirror and the Palette: Rebellion, Revolution and Resilience: 500 Years of Women's Self-Portraits, will be published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson on 18 March 2021. She is currently working on a book titled The Other Side: Women, Art and Spirituality.
